Colorado Native Plant Society Demonstration Gardens
Two demonstration garden areas were created in 2019 near Bass Pond and Sandpiper Pond, with assistance from volunteers and members of the Colorado Native Plant Society (CoNPS). These native plantings provide habitat for pollinators and educational opportunities for visitors to learn about the value of water conservation, native plants, and landscaping with native species. Volunteers help maintain the gardens and conduct citizen science projects like Budburst - sign up to help on Offero. Guided tours of the gardens are also offered by CoNPS members - see Offero for more information. Funding from Larimer County Small Grants for Community Partnering made these gardens possible.

Milkweed for Monarchs Project
The "Milkweed for Monarchs" planting projects in 2016 and 2018 improved the shorelines of Bass and Sandpiper Ponds. Volunteers helped plant 4,000 showy milkweed (Asclepias speciosa) and swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) to provide habitat for monarch butterflies and support the mid-west monarch migration. Projects were sponsored by the Loveland Initiative for Monarch Butterflies (LIMB).
What is River's Edge Natural Area?
River's Edge Natural Area was purchased by the City in 2011 as part of the former HP/Agilent property acquisition. Proceeds from the City’s Open Lands CEF (Capital Expansion Fee) fund were allocated for the acquisition, designating the site for open space uses only.
In 2013, the HP/Agilent Open Space property was given a new name – River’s Edge Natural Area. More than 150 name suggestions were submitted, with references to local wildlife, plants, history, and people. “River’s Edge Natural Area” was selected based on the natural features and location of the site along the Big Thompson River.
Following the 2013 Big Thompson flood, funds from a Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO) Flood Recovery Grant, as well as FEMA flood recovery dollars, helped pay for reconstruction of parking, trails, pond access points and wetlands damaged during the flood.
