To be closed October 2024 through January 2025 for paving
The Namaqua to Wilson segment of the Loveland Recreation Trail, a roughly ¾ mile stretch of trail running alongside the Big Barnes Ditch road, is the last portion of the city's loop trail that remains unpaved. A project to pave this trail segment will begin in October 2024. Along with the paving improvements, the project will include a safety rail and interpretive signage celebrating the history of the Big Barnes Ditch adjacent to the trail.
While paving operations are underway, the Namaqua to Wilson trail segment will remain closed and a detour route is required. Please follow detour signage south to 1st Street, then east-west along 1st Street and back north to the trail, as shown on the map below.
The detour directs trail users south toward W 1st Street where they can make the east/west connection.
Timeline
The project will begin October 7, 2024 and is scheduled to be completed by early January 2025. During this time, the Namaqua to Wilson Trail Segment will be closed and not accessible to the public. A detour route will be required. See map above and check the COTREX detour page for updates.

Bike Safety
Taking the detour requires users to walk and ride on streets and sidewalks. Keep these safety tips in mind!
- Ride with traffic, using the bike lanes where possible
- Limit biking on sidewalks and remember sidewalks are designed for walking speed. Moderate your speed, and watch and yield for pedestrians
- Walk/run against traffic, staying on the sidewalk where possible
- Cross intersections safely, using crosswalks, and be alert for vehicles
