Buckhorn Railroad History

Built and installed by Fred Lewis a former Woodward Governor employee and his wife Jean, the Buckhorn Northern Railroad in North Lake Park has been operating from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day since 1977. The City of Loveland purchased the train from the Lewis’ in 1988 and the Loveland Lions Club has operated the train since that time.

The Buckhorn Northern Railroad is an authentic replica of the actual steam train that hauled clay from the Devil’s Backbone to Wild’s Brick Yard west of Loveland. The train includes 1,588 feet of track, a small depot, a tunnel, a water tower, a gasoline powered engine, two open passenger cars, a cattle car, and a caboose. It supports 32 trips per day, 6 days per week, for 13 weeks each year, resulting in approximately 750 miles per year! The City of Loveland maintains the track, train and buildings.
