In 2019, Colorado state lawmakers passed a
series of bills mandating a statewide transition to renewable energy. The overall goal of those bills is to achieve 100% renewable energy for electricity generation by 2040, phasing out the use of fossil fuels, modernizing electric grids and promoting efficiency solutions that reduce overall energy consumption and demand. Loveland Water and Power efforts like the citywide deployment of advanced meters (to modernize our grid) and our residential and commercial programs and rebates (promoting energy efficiency) are local parts of this greater statewide transition.
Loveland Water and Power electricity comes from our community-owned, not-for-profit regional electricity provider
Platte River Power Authority, which provides electricity to Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont and Loveland. Platte River Power Authority has a
goal of transitioning to 100% non-carbon energy by 2030, exceeding Colorado's statewide mandate of 80%.
Achieving 100% renewable energy requires ongoing collaboration between utilities, policymakers and the public. As we continue into 2024, look for updates from us about how our transition to renewable energy will shape our operations — including a re-launch of our rooftop solar program later this year.
