Guest Lecture by Karl-Heinz Dukstein: Dorothea Lange, Ansel Adams and the Bounds of Documentary Photography 6 PM (free admission)
The Ansel Adams: Manzanar exhibition currently on view in the Museum’s Main Gallery also includes photographs by Dorothea Lange. Both Lange and Adams documented the incarceration of people of Japanese descent during WWII, each with their own unique interpretation. Lange, working for the War Relocation Authority, photographed internees arriving at Manzanar in 1942, and Adams took photographs of everyday life in 1943 for a book project called Born Free and Equal. Karl Dukstein, MFA, Professor of Visual and Media Arts at Front Range Community College, will present a discussion of these differences both in composition and historical context and address various approaches to documentary practice.
