Trek the Thompson is a FREE family-friendly event to celebrate the Big Thompson River. The event helps to educate participants about all the River brings to our communities. We will be exploring the role of the River as important habitat for wildlife, a recreation area, and a source for clean drinking water, among many other benefits. The festival features hands-on activities for all ages at education stations; "treks" along the river to learn about birds, plants, and Colorado water resources; prizes, food trucks, live music and more.
Stations along the Trek will include:
- Water Quality & Stormwater – with an interactive demonstration of how stormwater flows into the river system
- Macroinvertebrates and flycasting – see live macroinvertebrates and learn how to flycast
- Trails and development – learn about Loveland’s trails and open spaces and future plans
- Water transport and storage – find out how a system developed in the 1800’s is still used today to get our water where it needs to go
- Recreational safety and emergency response – meet emergency responders and check out the equipment they use for rescues and other emergencies
- Fishing – kid-friendly fishing demonstration station
- Forest Health – learn about why forest health is so important for our watershed
- Wildfire and the Big Thompson watershed – impacts from wildfire continue on many years after the fire. Learn about those effects and what Big Thompson Watershed Coalition is doing to mitigate them.
Big Thompson Watershed Coalition aims to enhance the health and vitality of the watershed and help recover from events like Cameron Peak Fire.
