Early settlers established their homes on land near lakes and rivers. They would also dig deep wells into the ground to collect fresh water to drink. Buckets and troughs for transporting water and storing water at the home were common. In 1947, the first reusable water bottles were produced commercially. This was after World War II when materials like plastic, aluminum, and stainless steel became more accessible.

However, these bottles still remained relatively expensive to produce and impossible for some people to afford. In the early 1950s, when high-density polyethylene was introduced, access to these bottles became more widespread. Today, bottled water is the second most popular commercial beverage in the United States.
